- The Place
Tiong Bahru Market is located along Seng Poh Rd, an old Chinese settlement, Tiong Bahru is very famous for the quality and wide range of local culinary delights.
Located at the 2nd level of Tiong Bahru Market, the hawker is very big, spacious and more windy.
- The Food
1) Teck Seng Soya Bean #02-69
Soya Bean @ $1.00
I was shock at the long queue, its just soya bean, no? I queue for almost 10-15 minutes before I manage to buy 3 cups of soya bean milk. It was too sweet for my liking, but I won't give them a minus point consider the fact that the soy milk and bean curd were freshly made everyday. Will ask to reduce the sugar syrup the next round.
2) 178 Lor Mee #02-58
Lor Mee @ $2.50 + $0.50 for Deep-Fried Shark Nuggets
This stall is famous for the deep fried shark nuggets. The shark nuggets was drowned in the gooey gravy for too long that I couldn't taste the crispiness BUT I must admit this is our fault because we took too long to eat as we were busy snapping away... Nevertheless the gravy was rather bland and limp in the flavour in my opinion and the shark nuggets taste like dory fish to me.
3) Tiong Bahru Lor Mee #02-80
Lor Mee @ $3.00
The traditional lor mee has more variety of ingredients but was rather subtle in fragrance. The gravy is less gooey too. Between the 178 Lor Mee and Tiong Bahru Lor Mee, the latter garnered the most votes.
4) Tiong Bahru Char Kway Teow #02-11
Char Kway Teow @ $4.00
I like the classic char kway teow with Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, slices of fish cake and plentiful of cockles. Although I love healthy food but a little more oil will keep the noodles more moist and it will be perfect if the noodles has that alluring smoky flavor of wok hei.
5) Min Nan Prawn Noodles #02-31
Prawn Noodles Soup @ $4.00
The prawn noodles was decent, the stock was subtle in flavor, it is lighter and thinner than the usual prawn noodles. I will prefer a stronger taste of prawn stock.
6) Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodles #02-30
Wanton noodles with pig's armpit @ $5.00
This wanton noodles with 不见天叉燒 (pig's armpit char siew) was a crowd-pleaser!
The delectable springy noodles was accompanied by incredibly tender and moist char siew made from pig's armpit. The char siew was perfectly caramelised with the fats and well glazed with bags of flavour. The soup was slurp-worthy with wantons that was stuffed full of water chestnut bits and minced meat. Everything was simply succulent!
7) Lee Hong Kee Roast Meat #02-60
Mix Roasted Meat @ $10.00
I likes the delicious crisp crackling with tender, moist roast pork. The burnt bits at the ends added texture and crunch.
The lup chong is fragrant but too salty on its own.
The char siew is tender and moist but my vote still goes to Zhong Yu Yuan Wanton Noodles pig's armpit char siew.
8) Tiong Bahru Pau #02-18/19
2 big bao, 2 char siew bao, 4 siew mai @ $7.60
Siew mai has thin wanton skin with juicy meat.
2 big bao and 2 char siew bao
Generous filling but I didn't try the bao as I want to keep space for dessert
9) HarriAnn's Delights #02-25
Vegetarian Glutinous Rice @ $2.00
The sticky glutinous rice may look plain and boring but the delectably chewy texture rice is pretty fragrant.
10) Jian Bo Shui Kueh #02-05
8pcs Shui Kueh @ $2.40
The smooth and soft shui kueh was oilier than normal. Generous scoops of savoury chye poh (turnip filling) was fragrant but less crunchy.
11) Tiong Bahru Fishballs #02-20
Fish Cake Variations @ $5.60
The handmade fish cake variations was decent, like any other fish cake.
BON APPETIT!! O H W A I T, I T ' S N O T O V E R!!
Shiting cute expression has something to say! Where is our desserts?!?
12) Liang Liang Garden #02-75
Milo Dinosaur Ice Kachang @ $2.00
The milo dinosaur ice kachang was like the normal ice kachang that has jelly, red beans and attap chee (palm seeds) minus the sweet corn, coloured syrups and condensed milk replace with generous milo sprinkled on top. I love it because it was less sweet since it doesn't has the coloured syrups and I love milo!! Don't you?
Shark Fin Cheng Tng @ $2.00
A light refreshing dessert with jellys that look like shark fin.
- My Opinion
Prepare to queue for at least 15-minutes for the famous stall, the lunch crowd especially on weekends is crazy!
After a hearty meal you can take a stroll around the neighborhood. Lots of interesting cafe around.
