If you grew up in Singapore, especially if you are a Chinese, you will know the old-time favourite Koo Kee Yong Tau Fu (高记酿豆腐) - Hakka-style young tau fu (6 pieces stuffed beancurd accompanied by a bowl of tasty flat egg noodles, topped with minced chicken) at People’s Park Centre.
Back in 1954, Mr Chong peddling simple noodles soup with niang tuo fu (酿豆腐) on the streets of Chinatown, carrying pots of noodle soup hung on a pole, slung over his shoulders. Popularity grew so much that he could no longer carry the weight on his shoulder, thus he set up a zinc and wooden kiosk under a tree next to the Majestic Theatre, and later moved into People's Park Food Centre.
Mr Chong's son took over the business in 1982 and has grown a small hawker stall business into an enterprise. Today, besides the highly popular signature Koo Kee Yong Tow Foo Mee, Gao Ji (高记) has develop various new products, with Noodlestar being their latest venture.
We have our tasting at Noodlestar, Jalan Sultan.
