Sharing one’s culture through food

IMG_9545

Last weekend I was invited to Stefan and Daniela (a German expat couple) home for an exclusive dinner in the bid of sharing one’s culture through food.

I was excited and at the same time nervous. After all we are total stranger, I don't know what to expect and who I will be meeting.

The couple lives in a very cosy and beautiful HDB flat in the western side of Singapore. I was welcome warmly together with other guests by Stefan and Daniela.

The couple has written the dinner menu on the white board that keep us excited and so looking forward to the dinner.

Stefan explained that the authentic Beef Roulade is their favourite Sunday food for family gathering. It is a dish that require more than 3 hours of preparation and cooking. It brings the family together preparing them.

Thin slices of flank steak are wrapped around bacon, onions and pickles, pan-fried and then simmered in beef broth, which is also made into a rich creamy gravy. The gravy is an absolute requirement to round off the dish and is usually poured over the meat.

Although this dish was considered a dish for common people; however, it is nowadays enjoyed by many as a festive dish.

The couple was really fun and lovely. Full of laughter even when preparing the dinner.

As they were preparing the dish, we help to setup the table, just like... a family.

The meat was very beautifully done, succulent, tender and yummy!

The dinner lasted for almost 2hours! There's so much to exchange and talk about like we were friends before!

The dessert was another highly raved dish, also their German dessert - Phil Cream

The couple has given us the recipe for this easy lovely homely dessert, I will share with you in the next post.

Stefan sang a German song for us, which is the love song for him and Daniela. Although we didn't understand, but it was a lovely song.

We enjoy the dinner a lot, thank you Stefan and Daniela for inviting and hosting us.

This is part of the Finest festival campaign and there are many people who have followed suit in inviting guests to their home for dinner. If you too want to experience exchanging culture through food, hop over to www.fairpricefinest.com.sg for more details.
